And how does it work?

Hello,
V-REP uses the RRT-connect algorithm, for path and motion planning. On top (or below that) Jacobian pseudo inverse algorithms for the IK calculations that might be needed, as well as a collection of precalculated nodes (motion planning).
Have a look at this and that page of the user manual, it gives a little bit more details.
