Friction coefficient

Post by geerten »

I know this is really part of the physics library, but I'm interested in some advice on the friction coefficient.

I have calculated the friction coefficient by measuring the Force for sliding a part across a surface, and divide it with the normal Force on that part.

However, I notice I do not get accurate results using these values..

Any tips/hints/advice on what to use for the friction coefficient? Is it equivalent to the friction coefficient as described on Wikipedia?

Hello Geerten,

The friction coefficient that you set for the ODE or Bullet physics engines does not represent any physical value (i.e. is not equivalent to the Wikipedia definition). In addition to that, ODE friction and Bullet friction are also different. This is tightly linked to the friction model, and the many approximations that one or the other engine does.
In not too far future we hope to offer a 3rd physics engine, that is industrial-grad, and that will have realistic friction coefficients.

Cheers

Ah, ok. Thanks.

I hope you can finish adding that 3rd engine soon!
