V-REP and 3D Graphics Engine

Post by amattag » 22 May 2013, 21:04

Hello all,

Given all the features that V-REP has, and which I think are fantastic, why it is not connected to a more complete 3D graphics engine like OGRE 3D? Why did you choose lib3ds instead?

Kind regards,

Antonio Matta.

Hello Antonio,

V-REP is based on simple OpenGL. lib3ds.dll is used for importing from the 3ds file format. OGRE 3D is great, and might be an option. But we are more thinking of embedding a ray-tracing engine, in order to have soft shadows and much more. Of course it will not be real-time, but very useful for realistic rendering and evaluation from within a simulation (e.g. image recognition in an a little bit more realistic manner).
