you can do this, but you will have to write a plugin, or, if your robot supports a serial port/ethernet protocol, then you could also do it from a child script.

Could you kindly tell me if we can control the number of beams of the hokoyu laser sensor?

But yes, you can customize and modify everything in that model. If you use the fast hokuyo sensor model, it operates with 2 vision sensors. For each one of them, adjust its filter called Extract coordinates from work image (double-click it to edit it, then modify the item Point count along X).
